My latest (Aura HD) has a whiter background - though still a tad gray, higher resolution, a really good back light that takes surprisingly little power (600 page book, with back light = 15-20% of battery), faster processor, and I don't notice a flash - which may or may not be there. I usually just leave the back light on and ignore changes in ambient lighting...
