That will work but will not get you logged into the device. That is something the desktop application does, or the newer firmware/devices do over WiFi.

Now back to my original and still mainly pertinent post...

The simplest thing is probably to find someone with a machine that will run the desktop application. But, depending on where you are, that might not be practical.

You could try downloading a firmware upgrade package and manually putting it on the device. When you disconnect, the firmware will be installed. And I am pretty sure the later versions will allow you to setup the Touch without a PC. See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 for the download links and the instructions for installing. Make sure you get the "Mark 3" firmware package.

There is also a method to create a dummy user which gets you through the setup. But, this is not useful if you are buying books from Kobo. This also needs you to manually upgrade the firmware.
