Thanks everyone. I will post an update in case anyone else ever has this problem.
The problem wasnt the battery. As far as I could tell, judging by the fact the light was green not orange, the battery was fully charged.
The Nook never once turned on, it wouldnt do anything. There were no messages of any kind, as the screen never once changed from the original message it displays straight from the box.
I did once very briefly see a message on my laptop that it needed to install driver OMAP3630 but the Nook wouldnt stay connected for more than a second or 2 so it was impossible to do anything.
I chatted with a B&N rep who said the device was faulty, nothing I did was ever going to get it going. Apparently its not a common fault but not unheard of either.
I have spoken to the seller (I bought it from eBay UK as B&N wont ship here) who will send me a replacement as soon as I return this one, and I dont have to pay shipping to get the replacement sent so thats great.
I bought this Nook to be a 21st gift for a family member so even if I had been able to get it going, I wouldnt have wanted to give them something I knew already had a fault. I am just pleased I decided to charge it and load it with books before I gave it to her.
Also luckily is the fact I bought myself a spare Nook a couple of weeks before I bought the faulty one and it hasnt been used yet so I can give that one as the gift and keep the replacement.
