Brand new NST wont turn on

Yesterday I bought a brand new Nook Simple Touch Glowlight. I opened the box, plugged it into a wall charger and left it overnight to charge.
Today the charging light is green, but the Nook will not turn on. Pressing the power button on the back does nothing, neither does pressing the N button on the front.
The screen still has the "Fully charge before first use" message that it had when I opened the box.
I have tried holding the buttons down for around 30 seconds, but that did nothing.
When I connect it to my computer, I get a Found New Hardware box pop up but it disappears immediately. When I leave it connected to my laptop I can hear the bing bong noise as it connects and then immediately disconnects. It keeps doing this every few minutes.
This is the 3rd one of these Nooks I've bought, the other two did not do this.
As I had to use a freight forwarding service to get this sent to me, I would rather not have to return it unless I have to as the shipping there and back would be about half the cost of the actual device.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Is it even fixable, or is the unit faulty?
Thanks.

ETA: I have also tried using a different USB cable and different ports on the laptop.
I have also now tried on a different laptop, with no better result. My laptop is an older one running Vista, the second laptop I tried is a month old running Win8.1.
