Devil's Food by Anthony Bruno (
SYKM) is 1st in his award-nominated Loretta Kovacs series of mystery thrillers starring a former assistant prison warden turned parole-violater-hunter, which may or may not contain comedic elements, free courtesy of re-publisher Diversion Books, and originally out from Forge in 1998.
According to the Stop You're Killing Me website, this was a finalist for the 1998 Anthony Award for Best Mystery. This has also been a KDP freebie in the past when the author was self-republishing it previously.
Currently free only @
B&N (also
UK), where it seems to have been a previous freebie that they haven't price-updated yet.
There's also another Bruno/Diversion freebie this week:
Bleeders, which seems to be some kind of more recent possibly-self-pub FBI profiler vs serial killer thriller, available @
B&N (also
UK),
Amazon (available to Canadians & in the
UK),
Kobo &
iTunes (both available to Canadians).
Description (a frankenmixture of the paperback and e-book blurbs, since neither is particularly good on its own, IMHO)
Loretta Kovacs and Frank Marvelli, from the Parole Violators Search Unit, aka the Jump Squad, are in hot pursuit of Martha Lee Spooner, a legendary embezzler who's jumped bail and headed for Florida. She manages to stay one step ahead of Frank and Loretta, transforming what should have been an easy arrest into a wild roller-coaster ride.
Soon enough, Frank and Loretta realize their jobs are on the line and time is running out. they vow to snag the slippery Spooner if it's the last thing they do.
In Devil’s Food, the first book in the Loretta Kovacs thriller series, it’s make-it-or-break-it time for zaftig Loretta when she’s assigned to the ragtag Parole Violators Search Unit, a.k.a. the Jump Squad. All her buttons are pushed when she goes undercover as a desperate dieter at a Florida fat farm in order to nab an embezzler who’s a perfect size 2.
