T. H. White's "The Once and Future King" also comes to mind as yet another popular long book that I didn't personally care much for.
I second the recommendation above for Cryptonomicon, though I felt it dragged toward the end, and Stephenson's newer doorstop, REAMDE, was also pretty good. I listened to the unabridged audiobook, and it went by much quicker than I thought a 1000 page book would.

I've read LoTR many times, back in the days when I didn't have the internet, let alone an e-reader. I've read The Once and Future King too.
Never even heard of Cryptonomicon till today. This is a find.
