I had a similar experience with The Dresden Files. I was not really impressed with the first book but kept reading. Saw improvement in the 2nd book and was totally hooked by the end of the 3rd.

If it had not been recommended by a friend, and I had not bought the first 3 books at once, I may never have gotten past the first book. So glad I did.
