Personally, I could not use a front-light in pitch-darkness, no matter the brightness. Either bright or dim, it would make little difference to me. Eyes vary.

If you're interested in the Onyx, you should really check out the very long interactive review on the digital reader site. Also, there is an alternative, cheaper Android-based e-reader out there called a Boyue T61.
