I don't think the idea is stupid. Technically not even impossible, but too limiting. It should be possible to sandwich an eink screen, a frontlight for the eink, and then an lcd layer on top. When using the eink, the lcd needs to be triggered to stay transparent and when using the lcd the eink needs to switch to all white so that the frontlight of it serves as the backlight of the lcd layer. Extreme lightloss through the lcd layer and the 2 needed pol filters might be too prohibitive for the eink.
