AZW3 file and page numbers

I started with an ePub which I converted to AZW3 with Calibre to send to my Kindle K3/keyboard. I noticed that when I looked at my position in the book, the Kindle displayed both page number and location. Now, I'm assuming that the page numbers came from the original ePub, but I found several topics here where there is a discussion that ePub doesn't have page numbers as such. I wouldn't think that Calibre created an APNX side file. So, I'm totally confused as to where the page numbers come from. And, do I have any control over them during the book generation? (Again in another thread I saw that ADE applied its own page numbering to an ePub by using a fixed 1024 characters per page.)
