I also have no way of knowing what firmware I have on this Kobo as I'm not the original owner.. Still been fun trying to get it to work.

Yes, the WiFi had two versions, one with a "Marvell 166e SoC" and one with "iMX357 SoC". I haven't seen anything about how to tell them apart. I don't know which version this image came from.
But, what actually happens when you turned it on? Any lights flashing or the screen changed? Something to try is a factory reset using the buttons. From memory, that is done by holding the centre button down while turning it on. If that isn't it, a search here should find it.
