I wonder if there might be a flaw in the capacitive layer of the screen so that it can't maintain contact under pressure and your tap and hold is perceived as a tap or series of taps.

I'm just speculating. I haven't heard of this happening before but it would explain why you can't tap and hold effectively.

I think I'd call Kindle support and ask them about it.
