Individual icon per format in format viewer

Someone must have come up with this idea before me. Alas, a quickish search did not turn up potential leads, so if I overlooked a thread or a post, please point me in the right direction.

Fiddling with the format browser I thought it would be nice if it was possible to fit an epub icon against epub files, a doc icon against doc files etc. etc. for mobi, pdf and so forth.

I found out that this apparently is not possible as Calibre uses the same icon for all formats and cannot handle individual icons per format.

Does anyone know of a fix?
