We currently have a sale on Kobo Aura HD in Ontario ($149) which seems a good price and I also have a $70 gift card that I can use at Kobo. However the world seems to be Kindle. The openness of the Kobo makes sense to me, but I have read that Amazon has pretty much sealed their books to their format. Just wondering if calibre would be the answer for me?

Calibre does convert epubs to formats (mobi, azw) that a Kindle can read. I use to own a Sony and currently own a Kindle. The reason why people say the Kindle is closed is because it uses a different format than epub. Epub is the format used by most other ereaders such as Kobo and Sony. So if you're using a Kindle but not using Calibre to convert, then yes, it is a more closed reader because you're pretty much restricted to Amazon and whatever vendors still sell books in the mobi format. However, with Calibre, this isn't an issue. I have converted Kindle books to epubs and now do the opposite. So it's not an issue. I shop wherever I like and buy books in both epub and Kindle formats.
