To search in the books itself (and if it is just for metadata) takes a lot of time and is exactly the reason why I do not use Nickel anymore (after the last time my database got corrupted I could not get Nickel to index all my books anmorre, I gave up).

But why just a "sort by"?
It really is a search in the fields title, author, tags, series, path or any combination of these 5.
Just going by the options I see, since I don't use calibre to put files on my device I don't get far enough to see how it works. So you search with arguments for those fields and get back a list of matching files? Even for the AuraHD it might be taxing to have it generate, and maintain, a similar index file for the files and their properties/metadata. Perhaps it could be done from a PC producing a searchable index file from the user's "library" on a connected device and/or external uSD card. Then it might function on the less powerful kobos.
(OH No. not a Koreader Desktop?)

Luck;
Ken
