There are Apps that can be added to IOS that dramatically bump up volume, give more control over treble and bass, and even create more of a dynamic surround sound. I was having a lot of difficulties hearing many of my audio books before I adds these to my iPhone. It did take some experimentation to find the one the worked best for 'my' hearing, but once I found it, all worked well. I've even added one to my desktop computer. Instead of setting the volume at '9,' I can keep it down at '4' and still hear more clearly.
