@cybmole - I followed the same procedure and worked for me. No reboot necessary. See attachment for a screen shot of the actual registry entry.
As to its usefulness, some people don't use the calibre GUI at all, and others only use it as a catalogue. Via Save to Disk templates, the latter keep their 'books' in a folder structure whose structure they control.
