The symptom you mention indicates the battery is nearing the end of its life. The is normal behavior (ever decreasing run time and charge retention) for this type of battery. The only cure is replacing the battery, either just the battery in your current device or the complete device.
Over the decades, I've been forced to retire several devices, including the Clie UX-50 in my avatar, for this reason. By the time the battery life became too short replacement with newer and better devices proved the better value.
