I suppose that would work, but it could start getting expensive on the HDD if you start installing a bunch of stuff. 16GB is not a lot for root+swap, and internal is much better performance.
That really is the chief problem with Chromebooks IMO -- and only a problem if you intend to use it as the hardware for some other *nix.
