For starting and stopping, I currently using two scripts that pazos provided. You can connect only to already know networks. That means that one has to use nickel at least for the initial identification (or one fills in the data manually).

Great, just in time for the Over The Air (OTA) update feature in Koreader's recent builds. Between this one and Cgm999's it should have it covered.
