What I know for certain is that the biblical prohibition did not take into account supernatural entities. I guess there's two ways of looking at it -- as a non-humans thing, or a dumb-animals-of-the-field thing. I'm not actually sure that question can be answered to anyone's satisfaction, though. Also, this conversation is is going down some mildly frightening paths, and yes, I know I did it.
