My eyesight is poor, so I hold the e-reader close to my face. A stand would be exceedingly useless for me.
I can hold the tablet like that for hours. For the e-reader, I put the lower right corner in the palm of my hand to brace it, and put my right thumb on the bezel to flip pages. I hold it like that for hours if I can put my elbow on some sort of support, be it a table, a chair, or sometimes, my knee.
Even my tablet (10,1 inch, 600 grams) is no problem. I put it into the web of my hand, between my left index finger and thumb, and make a V with my index finger and middle finger.
