Just tried changing the affiliate to Kobo and I get the same thing. If wi-fi is off, I must connect to be able to do any search and can't cancel the search unless I first let it turn on the wi-fi.

The bar with the faded "Search Kobo" is just a button, when I tap it I get the actual search box with a faded "Title, author or keyword" and a pull-down menu to select Bookstore or Library search. The WiFi prompt doesn't appear at all.

Even with a Bookstore search selected I can enter something in the search box, but I don't get prompted to turn on WiFi until I tap the "Go" keyboard button.
Is your wi-fi already enabled when you first tap the bar/box for search? If wi-fi is enabled, then it works as it should. If wi-fi is off though, I have no choice but to first connect to the wi-fi and I'm unable to do anything else until I do let it connect.
