You got me. I've done very little with automator, so I've never bothered to learn the ins and outs. At work I don't need to wrap stuff up into apps, I can just use scripts as-is. Alas, that wouldn't work for me at home with this script, so I learned just enough to wrap the script up and drop it in the Applications folder.
