Easy to read, adventure type books required

I like to read simple adventure-type books in other languages. I find anything heavy a drag. No character development necessary. Just simple language and page-turning plots.

For example, I'm reading A Fall of Moondust by Clarke. Zero character development, all-external adventure about a ship trapped on the Moon. I might try the John Carter stuff, and maybe Sherlock Holmes. If you can think of anything low-brow and well-written, let me know! I have a penchant for sci-fi, but war stuff is good too, or espionage, or anything.
