If you're interested in staying with Amazon, the current Paperwhite has a faster processor than the first generation. However, I get the sense that storage is very important to you. Are you running out of space on your current Paperwhite? If so, you may want to get an ePub reader like the Kobo Aura that allows you to store books on a MicroSD card. It also has backlighting and similar battery life to the Paperwhite.
