Probably not illegal, but enough for me to not want Amazon or Kobo etc. to feel I might be doing this to their detriment.
Oh, it is against Amazon's T&Cs, certainly, but it's not illegal, and it's assuredly not "theft".

I buy most of my books from Amazon, but not a single one of the books on my Kindle has been download to my Kindle from Amazon. They have all (where necessary) had DRM removed, and been sent to the Kindle by Calibre.
