I have had the Cybook for seven months now, and never bothered to get the extra case. I like it small and light. I dropped it on my hardwood floor once, and the plastic cover tore open from one corner, but I just squeezed it and it snapped right back.
I get occasional freezes, especially when booting up, and need to reset and reboot. I suspect the cause is my cheapo-bulk-brand SD card. It does not bother me much.
