However, reading a user device and acting upon it has somewhat more 'Big Brother' connotations than detecting DRM free copyrighted works placed on ones own servers. I think I prefer to let them (Amazon) make that call, rather than gift them the opportunity and allowing them to get stroppy over blatant misuse of their server space.

I do grant however that, of late, the distinction between cloud and device is becoming more blurred and thus easier for organisations to police and protect their interests, however misguided.
