I completely understand FinancialWar's perspective. Calibre has tons of features, and adds more regularly, but I seldom have need of them right now. So I only update my working copy of calibre about once a month.

Besides the reasons stated in the manual (good linking gbm!), there is also this: Users may prefer to manually update so they have complete control of how, when and what is downloaded - rather than worrying something unwanted might be pushed on them.
I, at least, didn't recommend them -- I merely told @FencepostErr1r that there is a way to do it, which requires setting up and gives very good control over how and when it gets done. Even my solution which uses cron jobs, can do without and instead get run manually.

Also, I run from source anyway, so it's kind of a moot point for me.
