Here's my theory: Amazon bought a whole bunch of 4gb hard drives to put in the next release of Paperwhite (to come out this fall), and stopped buying 2gb HDs. The 2gb HDs ran out, so they had to put the 4gb HDs in the current model, but they don't want to advertise it, since they will use the 4gb storage as a selling point on the next Kindle ("twice the storage!!!").
Anyway, I don't think it's any big deal. Products to improve, after you bought yours. That's the way of technology.
