You're not alone. I also planed to read first 3 books. But I managed first 2. First one was bearable and 2nd one was downright boring to me. I stopped before I suffocated on that dry humor.
Not funny at all and a drag to finish.
If I want something funny, I'll stick to Terry Pratchett. He always makes me laugh.
In my case I don't think Douglas Adams kind of humor has anything to do with Monty Python which I absolutely adore and find hilarious. I find English humor funnier than American type, including Black Adder, Mr. Been, Red Dwarf, IT Crowd, Only Fools and Horses, and lets not forget Fawlty Towers, and so many more.
These books were simply trying too much to be funny and failing miserably. Not liking them has nothing to do with not getting the British thing, and everything to do with them not being funny!
