I felt much the same way back when I read the omnibus. And I do usually appreciate humour (and I'm perfectly capable of appreciating humour by authors from countries not mine, written in languages not mine, including English/British).
My only other exposure to Adams comes from Doctor Who, where I found some of his stuff amusing and some deadly dull.
Humour, more than anything - to me - is just so very subjective. I've found in recent years that (with some exceptions) I don't really tend to be overly keen on most humour where it's obvious it's supposed to be there. :-/ It often feels... forced, I guess? I can see it's supposed to be funny, but it's just trying too hard, or something.
