You can buy and transfer DRMed EPUB books on your Mac, however you need to authorize the Reader for your Adobe ID first. This is a one-time process but it can be done only on a Windows machine with Digital Editions and eBook Library installed.
You can also use shops that provide books without DRM, e.g. Baen's Webscriptions, Fictionwise (Multiformat books) and some others. See here.
