I wanted to keep an open mind about this, I thought maybe button less might work.

But no, Kobo has proved that buttonless is not going to work with PDF on a small reader at least. When zoomed into PDF, Kobo has no way of knowing if I want to turn page or just scroll around. Until Kobo improve their software and somehow be able to diffierentiate the different types of input, buttons is a must for PDF on a small screen.
