Thanks for your help. I hope some others will learn from my mistakes.

As the advised tweaking of the font.hinting.mode brought no discernible change for emboldening, I realized that there should be another reason: my mistake was that I had kept the the "embedded style" ON while I was using a side-loaded font...

Now, when I select "embedded style": OFF, I got these results for "regular" and "bold (see screenshots) using my side-loaded font. The emboldening looks a little too strong. Such a setting cannot probably be kept for a whole book.

It would be precious if the user could have some control over it (like for frontlight levels).

Edit: screenshots taken with font.hinting.mode left to 2.
