Seems I have a bit more research into cases to do! Thank you all for the suggestions.
I also wold never attempt to even go out in the strong Greek sun (rival to Arizona, certainly), never mind use a tablet. So yes, the resolution would make the screens pretty much even. My eyes cannot really make out much of a difference.
In my mind, the main advantage of the pro series would be the maturity of the line, being out 5-6 months makes it a bit less of a risk for me, and a bit less expensive. I have to bring it to Europe for the next few months so it will be out-of-warranty area. I have contacted Samsung to see if I can get an international warranty, so far no.
The gifts are not a big deal for me - I'll use the Google Play credit + the audio books - although they are not something I'd generally pay for, so it's not really money saved.
