There is no network usage when mirroring directly to you own hard drive.
Syncing a subset mirror is less network usage than syncing the whole thing. Hence my advice.
Why keep the autoconverted copy -- you mean aside for the part where it takes a long time to convert the next time, particularly if there are dozens or hundreds?
