I just bought the Aura HD as my first ereader, as it appealed to me more than the T68. I study computer science and could probably find a dozen things to fiddle with in the T68, but I was looking for a minimalist electronic book with no distractions which the Aura HD does wonderfully.
The Aura HD seems like a niche product, as most people won't need or want to pay extra for the high res screen. So while Kobo are seemingly doing a watertight Aura version to add to the lineup, my guess is the Aura HD will not be iterated upon until the screen/cpu/battery/etc tech has advanced enough for a similarly priced meaningful evolution.
