And there lies the promise and the peril of KU.

KU is really a family reading plan.
Most reading families already share their Kindle purchases--so KU with its ten book at a time limit can easily keep a couple or even a big family reading for a modest sum.

The peril lies in the resulting author payouts...

But even there I suspect the indies will adjust and the result will be a lot less permafree and $0.99 books outside KU since it will make more sense to just enroll them and get both extra visibility and some actual cash. Another outcome is that since KU doesn't discriminate by length, it is a natural home for short stories, essays, and serials--all things Amazon has been trying to encourage. For short story writers it may make more economic sense to unbundle anthologies and run the individual stories through KU than trying to sell the collected volume.

Interesting times are coming.
