As should be clear by now, many folk do. You may have incorrectly extrapolated YOUR not caring onto everyone else.
As with any craftsman, an author inappropriately misusing the tools of his craft produces inferior work, and many readers (not necessarily you) notice and care.
Metaphor, wit, plotting, vocabulary--all are important elements in quality writing, but so are the underlying elements of syntax and grammar.
