Thanks for the suggestions, Lynx-lynx and mitford13! Charles Todd and Jacqueline Winspear also have mystery series set in or around the war years.

Now I must ask myself why I would set a Great War reading challenge for myself and then immediately seek to circumvent the drier aspects of the educational goals by finding every mystery ever written set in that time period.
