psychobunni - did you try running calibre with no browsers running. Running a browser with active flash pages and calibre concurrently on a 1G box is sailing close to the wind.
Also try running in safe mode see
Calibre constantly crashing - help? - just to see if it stops crashing. It may not be flash.
If you can't add more memory to the computer, you could switch to using linux. Or go back to XP, as its numbers dwindle it becomes less attractive as a malware target.
