One of those people is Kovid Goyal. An independent programmer that is the principal developer of Calibre. He does have a group of volunteer helpers.
Kovid makes living by maintaining Calibre in a way I have never EVER seen ANY company maintain a piece of software. And I have seen quite a lot of software, some of it very, very expensive. Thankful users make donations to support Kovid.
Kovid posts on this forum under the name kovidgoyal.

One of those volunteers, that help Kovid with the development is also the author of Calibre Companion.
