For which there is no solution. Why discuss it if it can't be fixed? When it comes to public domain books, you can either trust/hope that the uploader/seller has not made undocumented changes (or even ask them), or you can forgo the ebook and buy/borrow/find a print copy that suits.

None of that changes the fact that the answer to the OP's original question is; "you don't." But with a little research, you might be able to limit the possibility of getting an altered text. If that still doesn't let you (the OP) sleep at night, then don't read ebooks.
