The husband in the novel is supposed to be based on Elizabeth von Arnim's second husband: Lord Frank Russell, the second Earl Russell. If so, he can't have been a very nice person.
Actually, he almost certainly wasn't. He was known as the "wicked earl" and had been successfully prosecuted for bigamy in 1901.
He died in 1931, and the earldom went to his younger brother, the philosopher Bertrand Russell (who continued the family tradition of marrying often; but kept to one wife at a time).
