A Nexus 7 frequently requires a prolonged button press to start up.
Incidentally, there is much discussion of slow battery charging, sometimes blamed on an operating system update.
I can report a complete cure after I clicked the case open, disconnected the plugs from battery and charging port (some small screws to remove for the latter), gave everything (including the usb port socket) a squirt of switch cleaner and put it all together again.
Quite likely only one of these was necessary :-)
