On all the pre-touch Kindles the store is a standalone app.
On the newer touch and PWs it is a *local* HTML5 app if I remember correctly. So is the reader app, which is why it was so easy to jailbreak it originally.

I thought it was cool.
Especially once we started seeing epub readers for jailbroken Kindles.
