It's just a two wire connection, with a + and - line. To transfer data (for security) you would need a third cable. In theory it is possible to transfer data and power over just two wires, but the circuit would be more expensive than a third wire.

My speculation:
I don't think the electronics inside the Kobo can sense what battery is connected. It just needs to be a charged, single-cell LiPo battery (3.7V nominal, 3.6V-4.2V during operation).
