I'm still happy with my first generation iPad Mini. I probably won't upgrade for another three years, and will most likely start saving current apps after iOS 9 is announced if it doesn't support it.
I don't think the market is saturated is a good excuse. I just think Amazon isn't learning from the experience. That developers have no desire to be a part of the Appstore, that nobody wants to save 10% on IAP, that most of it is gained through free specials they have, and that most people don't like the OS that is shipped with their devices.
It says a lot that even the majority of retail stores don't even sell them anymore.
Did you see the new Fire Phone ad? It's pretty laughable, and sad, because they're trying to sell a grownup's device via children (I'm not surprised though, I saw a three part documentary on tactics companies use to make us splurge on stuff).
